This cryptocurrency outlook for 2026 draws on the crypto chapter of NAGA's Q4 2026 Market Outlook, "The Dollar Decides", by Frank Walbaum, Market Analyst at NAGA. The full report, with 20 charts, three scenarios and a quarter-long calendar, is available as a free PDF.
Crypto market outlook 2026 — key takeaways
The outlook's view on crypto for the rest of 2026, at a glance:
- Bitcoin: neutral, overbought, with a reset first. Key level $81,000; up 42.7% in Q3 but down 5.4% for the year to 30 September.
- Ether: neutral. Up 71.3% in Q3 but down 10.1% for the year to 30 September.
- The drivers to watch are the dollar, ETF flows and US regulation. A dollar correction would support crypto; a dollar breakout or a risk-off move would weigh on it.
- Risk-off is the most likely scenario, at 50%, which would put crypto under pressure.
Each view, the scenarios behind it and the dates that could change it are explained below.

Crypto in 2026 so far: a weak first half, a strong Q3
Crypto was the strongest asset class of Q3, after declines in both Q1 and Q2. Bitcoin gained 42.7% in the quarter, its best performance in more than two years, and Ether rose 71.3%. Both remain lower for the year, by 5.4% and 10.1% respectively, which shows how deep the first-half losses were.
Flows turned with prices. Spot Bitcoin ETFs took in $6.3 billion of net inflows in Q3, reversing roughly $5 billion of outflows in Q2, and the outlook dates the start of the current bullish move to September.
Bitcoin outlook 2026: overbought, with a reset first
In Frank Walbaum's view, most major tokens became increasingly overbought as sentiment improved, which makes a correction increasingly likely. The broader bullish move that began in September could still continue after a healthier reset, and $81,000 is the level that frames the uptrend. On the weekly chart, Bitcoin holds the lower half of its long-term channel, below its $126,000 record.

Past performance is not indicative of future results.
Frank Walbaum explains why he prefers a reset to a straight continuation:
"I'd rather see a correction than chase an overbought market — healthier entries could give the next leg higher more room to run." — Frank Walbaum, Market Analyst, NAGA
Bank forecasts have been trimmed but still point higher. Standard Chartered sees $100,000 by year-end, Citi $113,000 and Bernstein $125,000, all above the $81,000 key level in the outlook. NAGA's Bitcoin Forecast and Price Prediction follows these levels through the quarter.
Ether and altcoins: bigger gains, deeper losses in 2026
Ether's 71.3% gain in Q3 outpaced Bitcoin's 42.7%, yet its 10.1% loss for the year to 30 September is also deeper than Bitcoin's 5.4%. In both periods, Ether moved further than Bitcoin.

Past performance is not indicative of future results.
For Q4, the outlook's overbought reading covers most major tokens, not only Bitcoin, so the case for a reset before the next leg higher applies to Ether as well. NAGA's Ethereum Forecast and Price Prediction, its ranking of the Top 20 Cryptocurrencies and the TRUMP Coin Price Prediction cover individual tokens in more detail.
Regulation and ETF flows: the crypto drivers to watch
Regulation remains a headwind in the US. The Senate failed to advance the CLARITY Act market-structure bill on 15 September, and Bitcoin briefly fell to around $76,000 that day.
ETF flows are the other driver to watch. The turn from Q2 outflows to Q3 inflows coincided with the rebound, which makes flows a useful gauge of demand in Q4.
How the dollar and the Fed shape crypto in Q4 2026
Within NAGA's outlook, crypto sits firmly on the risk-on side of the dollar story. A dollar correction and softer Fed expectations would be supportive, while a dollar breakout or a broad risk-off move would likely weigh on prices.
Scenario Probability Crypto Trigger Dollar strength continues 25% Under pressure DXY breaks above 102.50 Dollar correction 25% Supported Weaker US data, a more dovish Fed Risk-off environment 50% Under pressure Weaker equity breadth, a fading AI narrative Directional expectations only; not a recommendation.
The dates to watch follow from the table: US CPI on 14 October, 10 November and 10 December; the FOMC decisions on 28 October and 9 December; Big Tech results on 28–29 October; and the US jobs reports on 6 November and 4 December. For Q4, crypto is likely to be one of the clearest tests of which scenario is unfolding.
