Hedge

An investment made to limit risk. An example of hedging would be through the diversification of the portfolio, which means investing in different unrelated financial assets so that the risk is well divided between those assets in case of an adverse price movement. Investors/traders sometimes refer to hedging as an act of taking the opposite direction of their existing investment during periods of uncertainty in an effort to offset their market exposure.
