Why is HONDA MOTOR CO stock price going up?

HONDA MOTOR CO

Bulls say

  • Motorcycle business profitability and scale

A high-margin, record-performing motorcycle segment provides durable earnings and geographic diversification (strong demand in India and Brazil). Its scale and steady demand reduce overall cyclical exposure from autos and generate recurring aftermarket and financing revenue that supports long-term cash flow.

  • Strong net cash and operating cash generation

A sizable net cash position and robust operating cash flow provide a durable liquidity buffer to fund capex, R&D and EV transition costs, absorb shocks, and sustain shareholder returns. This financial flexibility underpins strategic investments and risk management over multiple years.

  • Secured long-term China JV partnership

Locking the GAC Honda JV through 2038 secures local production, distribution and R&D capabilities in China—a structurally critical market—supporting long-term competitiveness in electrification and intelligent vehicles and reducing execution risk for local product programs.

Why is HONDA MOTOR CO stock price going down?

HONDA MOTOR CO

Bears say

  • Profitability deterioration and margin compression

The swing to negative net income and compressed gross margins indicates structural pressure on pricing or cost absorption. Sustained unprofitability erodes equity, lowers ROE, constrains reinvestment ability, and increases the risk that operational fixes will be needed to restore durable shareholder returns.

  • Large, uncertain EV-related losses and FX sensitivity

Material and open-ended EV supplier compensation risks create large contingent liabilities that can materially impair profits or cash. USD-denominated settlement exposure adds currency risk, complicates multi-year planning, and may force reallocation of capital away from strategic investments.

  • Rising leverage and weaker balance-sheet resilience

Higher leverage combined with recent losses reduces financial flexibility and increases vulnerability to demand shocks. Elevated debt levels constrain the firm's ability to finance capex, weather cyclical downturns, or fund aggressive EV investment without eroding liquidity or increasing financing costs.
