A Theatrical Tribute to the Unheard Voices of Cypriot Women
October 7, 2024 – In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus, NAGA is proud to sponsor Echoes of Her, a powerful and evocative theatrical production that will run from October 11–13, 2024, at the Film Etc. Creative Space in Engomi, Nicosia. This production shines a light on the often-overlooked experiences of Cypriot women whose resilience and strength have been instrumental in the nation’s history, yet whose voices have remained unheard.
Based on Echoes of Her: 50 Years of Monologues, a book by renowned communicator and author Katerina Nicolaou, the play brings together five dramatic monologues under the direction of Marios Ioannou. Through these heartfelt performances, the stories of mothers, wives, daughters, refugees, and caregivers emerge, revealing the personal struggles, endurance, and quiet strength of women whose lives were forever altered by the invasion.
NAGA: Supporting Empowerment through Art
As a key sponsor, NAGA is committed to supporting initiatives that empower marginalized voices and foster cultural dialogue. By sponsoring Echoes of Her, NAGA reaffirms its dedication to uplifting meaningful artistic expressions that resonate deeply within the community. The production provides a platform for Cypriot women to share their personal narratives, embodying NAGA’s values of perseverance, innovation, and the courage to break new ground.
NAGA recognizes that Echoes of Her moves beyond the typical narratives of the Cyprus Problem to focus on the untold stories of women who have been central to the nation’s history, yet often left voiceless. This collaboration marks a significant cultural contribution that both honors the past and looks toward the future, by giving these women the recognition and space they deserve to share their truth.
A Talented Cast and Creative Vision
Echoes of Her features an ensemble of talented actresses, including Marina Makri, Katerina Kampanelli, Dimitra Hadjiyiannis, Anna Farmakas, and Penny Finiri, each of whom will deliver compelling and emotional performances. Visual and performance design by Nefeli Kentoni and music composition by Nama Dama, with lyrics and editing by Maria Kikida, provide an immersive and profound experience for the audience, adding layers of artistic depth to the monologues.
A Celebration of Women’s Resilience
Author Katerina Nicolaou highlights the broader implications of the production: “I was confronted with the timeless marginalization of women within the Cypriot issue. This play not only acknowledges that history but celebrates the resilience of women who continue to navigate fragmented lives.” The play examines the emotional, psychological, and social impact of the invasion, offering a powerful tribute to those whose strength endures in silence.
Through this production, NAGA stands behind the idea that art can be a powerful force for change, reflection, and healing. Echoes of Her captures this ethos, providing a voice to those who have remained on the periphery for too long.
