Why is ARCELORMITTAL stock price going up?

ARCELORMITTAL

Bulls say

  • Strategic growth projects

The strategic project pipeline offers a material, identifiable source of future earnings growth beyond the current steel cycle. Management expects $1.8 billion of incremental EBITDA from 2026 onward, supporting scale, reinvestment capacity, and stronger long-term competitiveness.

  • Moderate leverage and asset support

Moderate leverage gives ArcelorMittal meaningful financial flexibility relative to its large asset base and capital-intensive industry. This supports continued investment in growth and decarbonization while reducing the balance-sheet strain that can intensify during weaker steel-market conditions.

  • Digital and low-carbon steel partnership

The AWS alliance can strengthen operational efficiency through predictive maintenance, quality control, process optimization, and digital twins. The linked low-carbon steel supply agreement also supports customer access and positions ArcelorMittal for growing demand from sustainability-focused construction buyers.

Why is ARCELORMITTAL stock price going down?

ARCELORMITTAL

Bears say

  • Compressed margins and negative free cash flow

The recovery in revenue has not yet translated into a comparable recovery in profitability or cash generation. Compressed margins leave earnings sensitive to steel spreads and input costs, while negative free cash flow can constrain funding flexibility for capital projects and shareholder returns.

  • European carbon-cost and decarbonization pressure

Rising carbon costs could offset some benefits from higher European utilization and fixed-cost absorption. The challenge is durable because decarbonization investment and regulatory compliance influence the region’s cost structure, product economics, and ability to preserve margins over future cycles.

  • China overcapacity risk

Persistent Chinese overcapacity can keep international steel pricing and spreads under pressure, particularly if excess production continues to reach export markets. Until restructuring occurs, uncertain timing and magnitude make it harder for ArcelorMittal to rely on normalized global pricing.
